Tell me a bit about yourself and about Ndingu Mntu. When did you start and what inspired you to start the project? OlwethuSana Kungisa is my name, Born and bred in PE, I have been an art lover for as long as I have lived. I was raised in New Brighton and I think that plays a major role because New Brighton is an art hub most of the prominent artists in the Eastern Cape come from there so what I mean to say is that my love for art is influenced by where I come from. Ndingumntu came about as a way of saying to people they shouldn't box me, I can be whatever and however I want to be. Prior to calling myself Ndingumntu I used to be around artists alot, attending live performances and exhibitions and everyone would always ask what is it that I do, and they will each give their titles according to what they thought I was and at that time I wasn't doing anything art related in terms of studies or career path. I started with ceramics and jewelry design about a year ago but I've come across ceramics before as a kid and doing it now made so much sense and I just fell in love with it. What do you love most about being an artist? Also which types of medium do you use to create your art? It is just having the audacity to be yourself and nothing else but that, how you have the freedom to create your own reality with your work and way of life. I use clay and recycled materials to make jewellery. What is the philosophy of your artwork? I see myself as a world recognised brand that uses different forms of art to promote healing of self and the entire community through art. I must also add that clay is very therapeutic so teaching that to kids in my community is one of my biggest heart's desires, I believe the children are the leaders of tomorrow so if you heal the children you heal the nation and imparting a skill that will never be taken away from them. You have been an artist for a while now, what have been your highest and lowest moments as an artist? My highest moments have been getting the opportunity to exhibit my work in the most renowned universities like NMU, Rhodes and Galleries around the Nelson Mandela Bay. Where do you get your inspiration from? My inspiration comes from everyday living, seeking healing and a home within myself and recalling past memories that come through spirit and manifest in physical work and just being intune with the higher Self. Where can people see more of your work?
