Tell us a bit about yourself
I am a 25-year-old, Cape Town-based Marketer, Content Creator and Flatlay Photographer. I have an undergrad degree in Sociology and an Honours degree in Industrial Sociology. I am originally from Port Elizabeth but have been living in Cape Town for the past 6 years, and it's here that I found my love for photography and wanting to become a content creator.
What inspired you to become a photographer?
I was originally inspired to become a photographer after falling in love with portraits and taking photos of people's faces. It's something I thought I would eventually see myself doing in the long run. However, what I love about flatlay photography is how I only have one camera angle to work with. The challenge this brought me was one reason why I kept on going with flatlay photography. It's so different and has an art to it and I am always inspired by the creative boundaries I push for myself within this photography style.
Can you please share a few tips on how to master flatlay photography & perfectly capture an image I always say that the 3 things you need to practice to progress to perfection in flatlay photography are: 1. The background and surface you use to place your objects for the photo. 2. The layout and how you place the objects. 3. The details & the extra little things you do to help elevate your flatlay photo. A flatlay photo is primarily taken from above so keep this in mind. If you have a product that you are highlighting or showcasing, get closer to the actual product. If you have more of a scene in your flatlay, get higher with the camera to capture more of what you are photographing. You're also a content creator, what do love mostly about being a creative? What I love about being a content creator is challenging myself to tell stories creatively and authentically through my content. If it doesn't feel real to me, I won't create it so there's this delicate dance I do between creating high quality content that also tells a story and feels authentic to both myself and the viewer. Lastly, what have your been highest & lowest moments & how do you juggle your academics & creating content? A high moment was definitely working with Orms this year. They are a much-loved brand and my relationship with them began a few years ago when I bought my own DSLR camera from them. It was a dream come true to work with them this year. A low moment would be during the times I just started out with flatlay photography. I'd constantly compare myself to the bloggers and influencers from other countries because I felt that I was supposed to be at their level. However, I realised that comparing my work to others is exactly how you lose the joy in creating. I had to change my mindset to being open and willing to simply learn more about flatlay photography, and doing my best and working on being better at my own photography game. I currently work full-time so it's definitely been a balancing game between my full-time job and my creative career. There is only so much I can do so I have to be aware of the amount of work I take on, and then managing my time and resources to each in order to maintain a high output is key so that I don't experience some kind of burnout (which still happens to this day because no one is perfect and I don't always get it right).
