Mbasa Ntshengulana, is an interior designer from Margate, south coast of Kwa Zulu Natal currently living in Cape Town, she's a very focused, full of life, fun, kind, beautiful and loving young woman who is deeply rooted in God. She was raised by her grandparents, together with her cousins and later moved in with her mother; a single parent and sister who is her everything and go to person. "I grew up around a lot single parents, women who have made me strong, women who have taught me the importance of being independent, making it without being dependent on anyone else, they made me realise the importance of bringing bread to the table and hence the inspiration to start my own business".
Growing up in a big family, Mbasa was one of many children in her grandparents' household, she was the different kid, she had an eye for detail, she loved things being organised and she grew with it. "I love looking into the deeper meaning of things, for example when I walk into a restaurant I look for aesthetics but more over I look at how it makes me feel being in that space, is it welcoming, and what is making me feel welcomed? Do I want to stay or do I want to leave for another place? I observe everything from the furniture to the floor to the lighting and the atmosphere of the space and that is what inspired me to choose this career ".
Mbasa recently started her own interior design company called 'Khesed'. "The word Khesed was given to me by my mom, it is a Hebrew word which symbolises kindness and love between two people and also God's love for His people, I loved this word because I'm a firm believer of God", there is no doubt that the word reflects Mbasa's loving and caring personality which is very fitting for the spaces she wants to create through her designs.
Her philosophy of design are spaces that are welcoming and provide comfort, quality and nurturing. "My eye right now is into contemporary design which is made to look trendy but does not consider how people feel in spaces, so I want to bring that back, contemporary, yes but yet providing comfort within spaces".
Mbasa's aim and vision as an interior designer is to create spaces that are welcoming, spaces that people will feel cared and nurtured for in "I feel like morden designs are focusing on trends rather than considering people's needs and feelings, for example the designs of modern day lounges are single chairs and sofas, whereas back in the day, in a lounge everything was so close together, lounges had long sofas and were a place of getting together and being cosy but the morden designs are taking that away by splitting the sofas, people are sitting apart but as for Khesed Interiors it is still trendy, I want it to be modern but at the very same time my aim is to consider people's feelings within spaces I will create, I am toning things down a bit but still giving the same feeling that contemporary designs emit.
I want my business to grow, I trust and believe God will open more doors, more projects, meeting new personalities, working with people and employing people, I want to grow as a designer, I want to learn more knowledge for myself and for my business.
